Irony of shopping at Walmart

So I have been noticing how bad the fields look lately with the wind blowing all the plastic bags around and them getting stuck on the fences around Tooele. I have also been thinking about ways to do my part in recycling, using less plastic etc. So I'm at Walmart today and I have about 10 things in a reuseable shopping bag and I place it up on the counter and start unloading it for the cashier. She asks me: "what is this?" I say, that it's a reusuable shopping bad. She says, "what am I supposed to do with this?" I say well, instead of putting the items in the plastic bag, I would like you put the back in this bag. She refuses. She places my items (10 remind you) in a plastic bag and sets it on top in the bag I have. I calmly suggest that I help her take the stuff out of the plastic bag. In my mind I'm thinking, does she not see the Walmart logo on the reuseable bag? She was pretty rude but after I paid, she did take the stuff out of the plastic bag and put it in the bag I had. This is while I have Devon and his friend hanging on everything, touching everything. There's no one behind me in line so I just don't get why she was so frustrated! That's slow Utah for you!

Oh that would make me so mad. I don't get why people are so inconsiderate sometimes. That is way rude, I'm sorry you had to deal with that. grr

That is super surprising? Wow. Great job for using the reusable shopping bag. My kids turned on a show on opb which said what a huge difference each person can make by making tiny changes, such as using as little plastic as possible. It showed dead albatross chicks who had starved to death because their stomachs were full of plastic. It showed parts in the ocean that were overflowing with plastic because of the way the currents flow. The pieces of plastic looked similar to the bird's actual food. Once I saw a show about a lady who didn't throw anything away in a garbage can. She recycled it all, and was conscious of the things she purchased. It's my dream and goal to eventually be like that. It's just amazing that our society as a whole uses so much plastic in everything, and that most of us like me aren't/haven't been aware of how affecting it is to nature! What's up with us humans anyway???? also, why didn't we switch to rechargable batteries a long time ago? regular batteries are so polluting, and when you throw them in the garbage, they pollute the water supply of the developing countries where the garbage is shipped to! Way sad. I'm excited to gradually have a change in my mode of operation so it's easy to not add to the garbage problem. It's my happy dream! It was very refreshing, although very very sad, to have such a straightforward show on tv that clearly showed what an effect our daily lives are having on the earth. Most people would be glad to change how they do things and it's sad that we're not better informed but exciting to think of the little things one person can do to make a difference!

I was going to ask if it was a wal-mart bag, that is so weird that she was so funny about it. Way to go for you! Do you use the reusable bags even when you have a kajillion things? That's my problem, but I'm going to look into it!
