Today Cannon competed in the State Geography Bee at Thanksgiving Point. We brought Rachel with us and Grandma Jean was able to come as well. The Bee started out with a practice round with each of the students grouped into 5 groups of 20 kids. We were sent downstairs with the color Orange. Cannon was second to last in the seating and for the practice question which was something like "Which city has more immigrants Kansas City, or Philadelphia?" Cannon said Kansas City and it was wrong but we later learned that he forgot what the other city was when giving his answer and was worried about asking for the moderator to repeat because he was only able to have 2 questions repeated. The questions were generally long and complicated like we expected but there were some that gave some great clues that were easier to identify the answer. Cannon got 3 out of 8 questions right and we were so thrilled! It was amazing to sit and listen as some questions seemed really straight forward and relatively easy and others that were tough. Unfortunately we were not able to take notes so I don't remember what other questions were. Cannon did not make the 2nd Preliminary round or the Final round but we stayed to see the Final round and it was a daunting experience! The top three places were 8th graders and had a definite common appearance about them! We are so proud of Cannon and especially for his hard work the past 3 weeks. Thanks to all our family and friends who helped him in the studying process especially Grandpa Ted who sent pages and pages of Geography questions and worksheets that he brainstormed. When Jed asked Cannon as we were sitting around waiting for the Final round if he would be interested in getting a subscription to National Geographic magazine (which sponsors the Bee) Cannon's response was "No Dad, but can we get Sports Illustrated for kids instead?" I'm happy to say that we have a well rounded SMART 6th grader!

Awesome Cannon. I'm sure he would have beat me.
That is so great! I laughed out loud about the sports illustrated for kids. :o)
what a great experience for Cannon! Good job for helping him everyone:)
That is so great. I am so proud of Cannon. Joey said when he competed in the State Geography Bee in Oregon he was eliminated in the first round. It sounds like the questions were really hard. I bet Cannon learned so much from it.
Congrats Cannon! Have you talked to Timmy about his Geography Bee? I remember he wore his free t-shirt a lot.
when I called you house last week I got to talk to Cannon for a sec about his experience. I told him congrats and that I was super proud of him! I LOVE geography.
