Gregor Mendel

So last Thursday I was asked to teach Rachel's G/T Challenge class about a famous person in History "Gregor Mendel". I was terrified. Previously I had mentioned that I would love to HELP in the class but that I was too chicken to teach the course. The director called me because she was going to Hawaii for her anniversary and had already called 6 Moms and no one was willing. YA THINK? She was really cool and gave me alot of information and help but I was still TERRIFIED. Oh did I say that I was Scared too? The class is about 20 kids who are supposed to be the best kids in their class, really good students, etc. But how to teach 2nd and 3rd graders about genetics was beyond me. I tried to tone it down and use easy words in my planning but I just wasn't sure it got through at all. Still don't. But at least we had an experiment planned. It's called chromatology and it supposed to tell you how each color you use, has a lot of molecules or a little. Anyway, it's with food coloring and water and paper towels. I think that part went over great and the kids had fun but I just had to blog about this because I am not a science girl, I never really enjoyed it. Maybe a little in my school days but please, give me a classic instead to teach or a spelling test or even an essay and I'm happy. So I've branched out and feel pretty proud for the attempt. Hopefully that will be all I am asked to do in the future. Plus the boys in the class were ROTTEN!

Boys are pretty rotten and I hear you about teaching science...not my best subject. Sounds like you really branched out and stretched yourself! You should be proud! I have never had a teacher ask me to actually teach about something...I would die! You are brave missy!
